Description

HeathKit RF Signal Generator Model SG-8 Completely Refurbished. This has been gone though top to bottom. Unlike other restorations on here that use cheap chinese crap ordered from god knows where, or used parts grabbed out of a junk box, these components were ordered from Digi-Key and are guaranteed new and authentic. All original 1/2 watt 20% tolerance carbon composition resistors have been replaced with 1 watt 1% tolerance metal film resistors. The old leaky paper capacitors have been replaced with Illinois brand poly film caps. I have taken the time to identify and correctly orient the outside foil on all of the new caps. The electrolytic caps have been replaced with high quality Rubycon capacitors. All appropriate leads were dressed with high temperature fiberglass tubing for added safety. The selenium rectifier has been replaced with a 1N4007 silicon diode and appropriate dropping resistor. The resistor is rated for 10 watts so it doesn't even come close to getting warm. X1 Y2 safety caps have been added to the line cord for added safety.(pic5) The original non polarized line cord was replaced with a polarized one. This is supposed to be an accurate piece of test gear. How accurate can you possibly be with 60 year old leaky caps and resistors drifting all over the place. To show accuracy I've included pictures of it hooked up to my digital frequency counter. (Frequency counter not for sale) The 400 cycle modulation tone works fine on both the RF and AF outputs. BNC connectors were added for modern test cables. Everyone knows most Heathkits are assembled by amateur hobbyists, most of the time pretty poorly. Its worth noting that this one was put together quite well. I really dont think it was used much. I think both tubes are original and they tested extremely good in my tube tester. The only thing that I can really complain about is part of the "E" band is missing. About 40 Mhz and below. I'm not sure why. I had this exact model when I started out aligning radios and such. I never even came close to using the "E" band. This signal generator is more than adequate for aligning old radios. Of course I would recommend using a digital frequency counter for complete accuracy. (Which are pretty inexpensive) I think its pretty obvious a lot of work went into restoring this tester. Save yourself all the time and trouble and get this completely restored one. If you're interested in other test equipment and electronics, be sure to check out my other listings. Thanks for looking
